BREAKING: #RevolutionNow protesters targeted with tear gas by police in Lagos

#RevolutionNow protesters were forcefully dispersed with tear gas canisters on Monday morning after heavily armed officers of the Nigeria Police Force disrupted a peaceful demonstration in Lagos. Security operatives cordoned off key gathering points across the metropolis, firing riot control canisters to scatter citizens demanding economic reforms, good governance, and systemic accountability.

The confrontation unfolded early in the morning when civic activists, human rights defenders, and concerned youth gathered near the National Stadium in Surulere to begin their planned march. Armed police personnel, supported by joint security task force teams and armored personnel carriers, blocked the venue entrances and instructed demonstrators to scatter. When protesters stood their ground and sang revolutionary anthems, officers unleashed continuous bursts of tear gas, causing panic and forcing citizens to run for safety through neighboring streets. Several demonstrators, alongside practicing journalists covering the event, were arrested and bundled into waiting police vans.

Human rights organizations quickly condemned the heavy-handed security response, describing the clampdown as an illegal violation of fundamental constitutional rights. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) issued a public statement demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all detained marchers. SERAP reminded state authorities that Sections 39(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria explicitly safeguard every citizenโ€™s right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without police interference.

Despite the intense police resistance and widespread tear gas exposure, organizers affirmed that civic movements for institutional reform cannot be extinguished through force. Conveners called on civil society groups to remain steadfast while legal teams work to secure bail for everyone arrested during the morning raid. Meanwhile, tension remains high around major commercial hubs in Lagos as security units continue patrolling major thoroughfares to prevent fresh assemblies.

    • Forceful dispersal of peaceful protesters with tear gas canisters at the National Stadium in Surulere.
    • Multiple arrests of civic activists and journalists, who were transferred to police command centers.
    • Strategic deployment of armored personnel carriers and anti-riot task force units across key Lagos junctions.
    • Sharp legal condemnation from SERAP and international human rights watchdogs citing constitutional violations.

“Stopping people from peacefully exercising their freedom of expression and right to protest is unacceptable and illegal. Nigerians deserve to exercise their constitutional right without fear of being targeted.”

The Lagos State Police Command maintained that its operational stance aims to prevent civil unrest and protect critical public infrastructure. However, public interest lawyers argue that preemptive arrests and tear gas deployment against unarmed citizens damage democratic institutions. As legal representatives file emergency petitions for the release of detained marchers, civil rights advocate networks are keeping close watch on government conduct. Will federal and state authorities respect constitutional protections for peaceful assembly during future public demonstrations?
