Oshiomhole Backs State Police, Says Governors Lack Tools as Chief Security Officers

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has strongly advocated for the creation of State Police, describing the current constitutional arrangement as contradictory and ineffective.

The former Edo State governor and lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District argued that it is illogical to designate governors as Chief Security Officers (CSOs) without giving them the necessary authority over security agencies.

    Oshiomhole Highlights Constitutional Contradiction

Speaking on the issue, Oshiomhole noted that while the Constitution recognises state governors as the Chief Security Officers of their states, they lack the power to give direct orders to the police.

โ€œThere is an inherent contradiction in the provisions of the Constitution. The state governor is designated as the Chief Security Officer. But what tools does he have to enforce security? How can a state Chief Security Officer have no authority to give orders to the police?โ€ he asked.

He compared the situation to calling a man a husband when he has no wife, stressing that the current structure renders governors powerless in addressing security challenges in their states.

Misuse of State Police Can Be Checked Through Elections

Oshiomhole, however, acknowledged concerns that some governors might misuse State Police if created. He said such fears should not prevent the establishment of the system, as Nigerians have the power to vote out any governor who abuses the privilege.

โ€œIf any governor misuses state police, Nigerians have the right to vote that individual out of office,โ€ he stated.

    Renewed Debate on State Police

Oshiomholeโ€™s comments come amid ongoing national discussions on the need for State Police to address rising insecurity across the country. Proponents argue that governors, being closer to the people, are better positioned to tackle local security challenges if given the necessary powers.

Opponents, however, have raised concerns about potential abuse by state executives, especially in politically charged environments.

    Public and Political Reactions

The senatorโ€™s position has generated reactions on social media, with some agreeing that the current security structure needs urgent reform, while others questioned his consistency on the issue over the years.

The debate on State Police continues to gain momentum as insecurity remains a major concern for many Nigerians.
