Anambra school ban targets defiant administrators

The Anambra school ban on extravagant graduation ceremonies entered strict enforcement this July across all twenty-one local government areas. Governor Chukwuma Soludo warned that any defiant educational institution violating the directive faces immediate closure. State education authorities moved swiftly to ease heavy financial burdens placed on struggling families by commercialised school activities.

State education authorities noted that nursery, primary, and junior secondary schools turned basic academic transitions into exploitative commercial ventures that alienated low-income earners. Parents faced mandatory levies for special uniforms, exorbitant party fees, and expensive photo books that severely strained household budgets during difficult economic times. Mrs. Amaka Ugwunwa, a parent based in Awka, told our correspondent that the government intervention brought instant relief to her household. “I didn’t know the directive would be implemented immediately until my children’s school called me to come and collect the money I had paid for the graduation ceremony,” she said. Schools found flouting these guidelines will face severe administrative sanctions and permanent sealing without exception.

    • Complete prohibition of graduation ceremonies and graduation levies for nursery, primary, and junior secondary classes across all regions.
    • Mandatory discontinuation of work-in textbooks to enable book reuse among younger siblings in financially constrained families.
    • Prohibition of compulsory end-of-year Christmas parties and special costume purchases imposed arbitrarily by school management.
    • Strict monitoring frameworks deployed actively by Education Secretaries across all twenty-one local government areas.

The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board issued a formal circular on July 10, 2026, outlining strict enforcement measures for all academic institutions across the region. Education Secretaries across the twenty-one local government areas received direct instructions to monitor compliance closely and report defaulting proprietors immediately. State officials emphasised that the policy permits only students completing Senior Secondary School Class 3 or Primary Six to hold conventional graduation milestones. This regulatory enforcement arrives as families grapple with severe economic pressures and high inflation rates across the country. Local communities warmly welcomed the policy shift, noting that lavish display cultures completely overshadowed traditional values of academic excellence.

“We have set out some basic standards to ensure that the poor are not made to spend so much just because their children are in school.”

Ministry officials will begin unscheduled inspections of private and public campuses next week to ensure total compliance with the state mandate. School administrators must now decide whether to abandon lucrative party planning or risk losing their operating licenses entirely through swift government action. Will private school owners successfully pivot toward academic-focused milestones before state inspectors arrive to seal their gates?
