Osun State Government raises alarm over alleged EFCC plot to freeze accounts

Osun State Government officials led by Governor Ademola Adeleke have raised an urgent alarm following credible reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) plans to freeze all official state bank accounts. The state administration characterized the alleged anti-graft move on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as an illegal attempt to paralyze governance just ten days before the upcoming state governorship election.

Why is Osun State challenging the EFCC over the reported account freeze?

State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, issued an emergency declaration in Osogbo warning that the anti-corruption agency has concluded preparations to target state accounts alongside those of top cabinet functionaries. Governor Adeleke asserted that the commission lacks any constitutional or statutory powers to unilaterally freeze the operational bank accounts of a federating state government.

Furthermore, the administration argued that crippling state finances on the eve of an election threatens essential municipal services, civil service payrolls, and security operations across all thirty local government areas. “The plot to freeze the state government accounts, if true, represents the height of lawlessness aimed at paralyzing legitimate government activities,” Alimi stated in the official release. Consequently, state legal officers are preparing emergency court filings to protect public treasury accounts from regulatory interference.

The sudden political escalation comes as electoral preparations reach peak momentum ahead of the August 15 governorship poll. Political analysts emphasize that freezing state finances during an active campaign period creates severe administrative instability and heightens inter-party friction. Opposition figures in Osun have called for financial accountability, while ruling party leaders insist the alleged freeze constitutes targeted political intimidation. The EFCC has not yet issued a formal public response detailing specific statutory investigations involving the state treasury.

    • Public disclosure by Osun State raising alarm over an impending EFCC freeze on state and cabinet bank accounts.
    • Firm rejection of the anti-graft agency’s authority to freeze state government operational accounts under existing federal law.
    • Allegation that the financial restrictions are politically timed to disrupt state governance 10 days before the August 15 election.
    • Urgent calls on federal oversight bodies to prevent regulatory agencies from being weaponized during state elections.

“The plot to freeze the state government accounts is meant to paralyze government activities ahead of the August 15th governorship election. There is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze state accounts.”

Civil rights groups and election monitors are keeping close watch on developments between federal law enforcement and the Osun executive branch. Meanwhile, candidate campaign caravans continue holding final rallies across the three senatorial districts before the mandatory pre-election blackout deadline. The outcome of this financial showdown will significantly influence campaign operations and public confidence leading up to ballot day. Will the EFCC clarify its legal stance to prevent administrative disruption in Osun State before voters head to the polls on August 15?
