Growing debate over candidate selection within the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has sparked fresh calls for transparency, accountability, and thorough screening of aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A group identifying itself as Concerned Citizens of Nsukka has urged the party leadership to ensure that only credible and committed candidates emerge from its internal processes, warning against what it described as political infiltration and undue influence in the selection of flagbearers.
The concerns were outlined in a statement signed by Kenneth Ugwuanyi on behalf of the group. The statement focused on developments surrounding the race for the House of Representatives seat representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency.
Particular attention was drawn to Dr. Clinton Above Ishiwu, an aspirant seeking the NDC ticket for the constituency. The group referenced a widely circulated interview titled, “N4 Million for 4,000 Voices: Why I’m Betting Big on Peter Mbah’s Second Term,” in which Dr. Ishiwu reportedly discussed financial support for political mobilisation linked to Governor Peter Mbah’s re-election ambition.
According to the group, the interview has generated questions among party members and political observers regarding party loyalty, political influence, and the role of money in electoral mobilisation. The statement encouraged members of the public to review the interview and form their own opinions on the issues raised.
The group also pointed to reports of Dr. Ishiwu’s alleged involvement in political activities associated with the PM4PM movement and events linked to the current Enugu State administration. Some critics, it said, believe such activities may conflict with expectations of aspirants seeking tickets under a party positioning itself as an alternative political platform.
At the same time, the statement defended Chief Tony Ugwu against allegations that he is connected to rival political interests. Supporters of Ugwu described such claims as false and politically motivated, insisting that publicly available campaign structures do not support the accusations being circulated against him.
The group maintained that Chief Tony Ugwu enjoys significant grassroots support across Nsukka and argued that attempts to discredit him are driven by concerns about his growing political influence ahead of party primaries.
Calling on the NDC leadership to remain vigilant, the group stressed that candidate selection should be guided by loyalty, credibility, grassroots acceptance, and electoral viability. It urged party officials to conduct comprehensive due diligence before issuing tickets to aspirants.
“The future of Nsukka politics should be determined by the will of the people, not by alleged political infiltration, financial influence, or attempts to manipulate party structures for personal interests,” the statement said.
