Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been officially affirmed as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections. At a special national convention of the party, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson presented the NDC flag to Obi, formally ratifying him as the party’s flag bearer.
Flag Handover Marks Major Opposition Milestone
The symbolic presentation of the party flag took place during the NDC’s Special National Convention. Dickson, a former Bayelsa State Governor and key figure in the party, handed over the flag to Obi in the presence of the National Chairman and other leaders. The moment, captured in videos circulating widely on social media, has been described by supporters as a significant step in consolidating opposition forces ahead of 2027.
Speaking after receiving the flag, Obi accepted the nomination and immediately announced former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the presidential election. The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is being viewed as a deliberate move to bridge regional and ethnic divides, combining strong support bases in the South East and North West.
Kwankwaso as Running Mate

The choice of Kwankwaso as vice presidential candidate has generated significant interest. Supporters see it as a strategic alliance aimed at presenting a broad-based national ticket capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Party leaders described the development as a demonstration of unity and shared commitment to national transformation. The NDC has positioned itself as a credible alternative platform, emphasising democratic internal processes and a focus on rescuing the country from what it describes as the failures of the current administration.
Implications for 2027 Opposition Politics
The emergence of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket adds another layer to the evolving opposition landscape. With Atiku Abubakar recently emerging as the ADC presidential candidate, the political space is witnessing fresh realignments as different groups seek to present strong alternatives for 2027.
Analysts note that the NDC’s decision to zone its presidential slot to the South and pair it with a strong Northern running mate reflects an attempt to build a truly national coalition. Party officials have called on all members and supporters to unite behind the ticket as preparations for the campaign begin in earnest.
The convention was reportedly conducted peacefully, with delegates from across the country in attendance. As the opposition continues to reorganise, the coming weeks are expected to reveal further details about the NDC’s campaign structure and policy direction under the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.
