Priscilla Ekwere Eleje made history as the first woman appointed Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The distinguished central banker shattered a decades-long glass ceiling by becoming the first female official to have her signature printed on the naira. Consequently, her historic milestone marked a major victory for gender representation within Nigeria’s financial leadership.

The accomplished financial leader hails from Afikpo in Ebonyi State, southeastern Nigeria. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Jos before completing the prestigious Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship in banking and management at Boston University in Massachusetts.

Furthermore, Eleje holds accreditation as a Certified Information System Auditor (CISA), a qualification that equipped her with deep technical expertise in auditing complex monetary systems. Women rights organizations across West Africa lauded her substantive elevation following years of dedicated service in acting capacities at the apex bank.

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) noted that her promotion represents a monumental step toward ending institutional gender disparity in public finance. “Her appointment remains a shining inspiration for every young African woman aspiring to reach executive heights in central banking,” NCWS representatives stated during a commendation event.

Her official signature first appeared on newly printed ₦1,000 naira notes, formally ending a 60-year tradition where only male directors authenticated national currency since the CBN’s establishment in 1958. Beyond signing banknotes, her office oversaw the complex logistics of currency issuance, note design, distribution security, and quality control across all thirty-six states.

Financial analysts emphasize that her ascension highlighted the importance of merit-based appointments in driving institutional reforms. Her landmark achievement continues to resonate as a powerful symbol of female empowerment throughout the South-East region and across Nigeria’s public service sector.

    • Substantive elevation to Director of Currency Operations following an exemplary tenure in an acting capacity.
    • Historic inclusion of a female signature on Nigerian banknotes, beginning with the ₦1,000 denomination.
    • Academic credentials spanning psychology at UNIJOS and advanced banking management at Boston University.
    • Strong pride and celebration among Ebonyi State leadership and civil society organizations nationwide.

“The inclusion of a woman’s signature on the naira is not merely a procedural step, but a permanent symbol of expanding female leadership across Africa’s largest financial institutions.”

Looking ahead, civil rights groups continue to advocate for greater gender parity across executive appointments in federal regulatory bodies. Meanwhile, development experts argue that empowering female economists in key policy positions accelerates broader socio-economic stability across regional markets.

Her lasting legacy continues to encourage higher academic and professional standards among young women across Ebonyi State and the wider federation. Will future administrative appointments at the apex bank continue to dismantle traditional gender barriers and promote equal leadership opportunities?
