The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday in observance of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the government in an official statement issued on Friday, August 21, 2026, by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
What is the message behind the Eid ul Mawlid public holiday declaration?
Extending warm congratulations to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and across the diaspora, Minister Tunji-Ojo urged all citizens to use the occasion for deep moral reflection and national cohesion. He emphasized that the anniversary offers a vital opportunity to embrace the virtues of tolerance, selfless service, and peaceful coexistence modeled by Prophet Muhammad.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.”
The minister noted that reflecting on these fundamental principles is particularly relevant as Nigeria navigates socio-economic reforms and strengthens democratic institutions.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
Calling on citizens of all faiths to maintain public order and mutual respect throughout the observance, Tunji-Ojo stressed that security and national development remain joint responsibilities shared between the government and the populace.
“Building and sustaining national unity is a collective responsibility. I call on all Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, stability, and national cohesion while celebrating with restraint and mutual respect.”
The Ministry of Interior reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country. With public institutions, commercial banks, and federal agencies scheduled to observe the mid-week holiday on Tuesday, normal business operations will resume nationwide on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
