China has renewed its commitment to strengthen security cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force, with a strong focus on cybercrime prevention, intelligence sharing, forensic investigation, and capacity building for officers. The pledge came during a courtesy visit on Thursday by a delegation from China’s Shandong Provincial Public Security Department to the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos
The Chinese team, led by Zhang Yuebo, Deputy Director-General of the Shandong Provincial Public Security Department, held talks with Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olohundare Jimoh, who heads Zone 2 Command covering Lagos and Ogun States. Speaking on behalf of Consul General Yan Yuqing, Deputy Consul General Wang Yue said the cooperation would begin to manifest within a short period. The Chinese side expressed readiness to deepen practical collaboration in combating transnational crime and cybercrime.
Zhang Yuebo reaffirmed China’s commitment, stating: “We are committed to deepening cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force through training, intelligence sharing and joint security initiatives.”
AIG Jimoh described the visit as “another milestone in the growing police-to-police relationship between Nigeria and China.” He said the partnership, which dates back to a 2019 exchange and cooperation agreement, has already yielded results.
He revealed that in May 2025, the Shandong Provincial Public Security Department hosted 20 senior officers from Zone 2 for a public security study tour in China. Earlier in 2025, another batch of 17 senior officers from the command, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Olubode Fakeye, underwent a two-week public security training programme at the Shandong Police College in Jinan City.
“The training greatly improved their operational capacity in service to the Nigeria Police Force,” AIG Jimoh said.
He listed key areas for future collaboration, including cybercrime prevention, transnational crime detection, counter-terrorism strategies, forensic investigations, technological policing solutions, and personnel development.
AIG Jimoh assured the delegation of the Nigeria Police’s commitment to protecting Chinese nationals and investments in Lagos and Ogun States, noting that the command polices Nigeria’s commercial hub where many Chinese businesses operate.
The renewed engagement comes as Nigeria continues to battle sophisticated cybercrime syndicates and transnational criminal networks. Security experts believe closer cooperation with China, which has developed advanced capabilities in digital policing, could help boost the Nigeria Police’s technical capacity in these areas.
This development mirrors a broader pattern of China expanding law enforcement partnerships across Africa. Only last week, the Chinese government donated 80 brand new vehicles to the Zambia Police Service to strengthen operations and mobility.
China has signed public security and law enforcement agreements with dozens of African countries and regularly trains African police officers under frameworks such as the Global Security Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
