United Bank for Africa (UBA) has appointed Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its new Chairman, succeeding Tony Elumelu, whose tenure ends next month after reaching the Central Bank of Nigeria’s 12-year limit for bank chairmen.
The announcement was made following Elumelu’s planned exit from the position.
Emmanuel Nnorom to Succeed Tony Elumelu at UBA
Nnorom, a seasoned banker and business executive from Isuikwuato in Abia State, brings decades of experience in the financial sector. He has held several senior leadership positions at UBA, including Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director for Finance, Executive Director for Risk Management, and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.
He currently serves as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, the investment company founded by Tony Elumelu. His appointment is seen as a continuation of strong leadership at the pan-African bank.
Background on the Transition
Tony Elumelu has led UBA as Chairman for the maximum period allowed under CBN regulations. His exit marks the end of a significant era for the bank, which has grown into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions under his stewardship.
Emmanuel Nnorom is expected to assume the role of Chairman once Elumelu completes his tenure. His deep knowledge of UBA’s operations and his experience across the group’s African subsidiaries position him well to lead the bank in its next phase.
Significance of the Appointment
Nnorom’s appointment has been welcomed in business circles, particularly in the Southeast, where he is seen as a source of pride. His track record in banking and corporate leadership is expected to help sustain UBA’s growth trajectory across the continent.
The transition comes at a time when Nigerian banks are navigating regulatory changes, economic pressures, and increasing competition in the financial services sector.
UBA has not yet released an official statement on the exact date of the handover, but it is expected to take effect next month as previously announced.
