Aliko Dangote announces plans for major new oil refinery in Kenya

Aliko Dangote announces strategic plans to build a major new oil refinery in Kenya, aiming to significantly boost energy independence across the East African region.Speaking during an interview with BBC News on Thursday, August 6, 2026, Africa’s richest industrialist revealed that the project is designed to replicate the success of his mega-refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, and reduce the continent’s reliance on imported petroleum products.

How will Dangote’s Kenya oil refinery impact East Africa’s energy sector?

The proposed $17 billion East African Oil Refinery, planned for Kenya’s coastal region in Lamu, is projected to feature a processing capacity of up to 700,000 barrels per day.Dangote emphasized that expanding refining infrastructure onto East Africa’s coastline will create a two-coast energy supply network stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean.According to project timelines disclosed by the industrialist, groundbreaking is scheduled for October 2026, with full operational readiness anticipated within four years.“Our primary goal is to make African nations self-reliant and completely independent from outside fuel imports,” Dangote stated during the interview.

Energy analysts and regional business leaders have welcomed the announcement as a transformative milestone for East Africa’s industrialization goals. Currently, most countries in the region rely heavily on costly refined fuel imports from overseas, exposing local economies to global price volatility and supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, the project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, stimulate regional logistics, and encourage domestic crude oil processing from emerging fields across East Africa.

    • Planned establishment of a $17 billion mega-refinery in Kenya with a target capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.
    • Strategic creation of a two-coast refining network extending Dangote Group’s energy footprint across West and East Africa.
    • Targeted groundbreaking in October 2026, with an estimated four-year operational timeline.
    • Broad regional objective focused on reducing foreign fuel import dependencies and driving industrial self-reliance.

“This initiative will have a massive impact across East Africa, ensuring our continent builds the capacity needed to refine its own resources and achieve energy self-sufficiency.”

While financing structures and site development plans advance, regional governments are preparing infrastructure frameworks to support the energy complex. Meanwhile, economic commentators note that the project’s long-term success will hinge on establishing reliable crude supply agreements with regional petroleum producers. As preparatory work accelerates ahead of the planned October groundbreaking, international investors are keeping close watch on East Africa’s evolving energy landscape. Will Dangote’s new refinery successfully position Kenya as the primary fuel processing hub for the entire East African corridor?
