Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, describing it as the first step toward building a new Nigeria.
The call was made during an unscheduled stop at Waru Wazobia in Abuja on Wednesday, where he interacted with residents, particularly youths and women.
Peter Obi Encourages Voter Registration in Abuja
Speaking to the people, Obi stressed that the power to change Nigeria begins with voter registration and not on election day. He described registering to vote as both a civic duty and an investment in the country’s future.
“I urge every eligible Nigerian who has not yet registered to do so without delay. Those who already have their voter cards should encourage their family members, friends, neighbours, and colleagues to register as well,” he said.
The former governor noted that a new Nigeria would not come through wishful thinking but through active participation by citizens who believe in and act for national progress.
Key Messages from the Former Governor
Obi urged Nigerians to choose hope over despair, participation over apathy, and nation-building over division. He reiterated his belief that “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
The interaction was captured in photos showing him engaging directly with residents, consistent with his style of grassroots engagement.
Public Response
The post has generated significant reactions online, with many supporters sharing it and calling on eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). Some have highlighted the need for massive registration, especially among youths, to influence future elections.
Others noted the importance of not only registering but also voting responsibly based on character and competence.
Importance of PVC in Future Elections
Voter registration remains a critical process ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers say high turnout during registration and subsequent voting could significantly shape electoral outcomes.
Peter Obi, who is widely expected to contest the 2027 presidential election under the New Nigeria Development Company (NDC) platform, has consistently emphasised citizen participation as key to national transformation.
The call comes at a time when INEC is conducting continuous voter registration across the country.
