Patrick Vieira Senegal coach interest has emerged as the Senegalese Football Federation targets the former Arsenal captain for the national team role. The move follows Senegal’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Talks began in recent days after the Lions of Teranga crashed out.
The federation made Vieira its priority candidate once it opened the process to replace Pape Thiaw. Born in Dakar, the 1998 World Cup winner with France left Genoa by mutual consent in November 2025 and remains free. Foot Mercato first reported the approach, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the federation has expressed clear interest.
“After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team,” the Senegalese Football Federation stated when it dismissed Thiaw, the decision came “in the best interests of Senegalese football.”
Senegal lost their opening group games to France and Norway, then beat Iraq 5-0 to advance as one of the best third-placed sides. They led Belgium 2-0 in the round of 32 in Seattle on 1 July before collapsing to a 3-2 extra-time defeat. Thiaw, appointed in December 2024, and his staff now face formal departure once the Ministry of Sports gives final approval.
Key points in the current process include:
- Discussions with Vieira already held in the past few days
- No formal agreement reached and talks still early-stage
- Ministry clearance required before any appointment
- Other names such as Hervé Renard previously considered but not advanced
- Vieira would take his first national-team role after club spells at New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa
What Comes Next for Senegal’s Coaching Search
The federation must first close Thiaw’s contract before any announcement. Vieira’s Senegalese roots and European coaching record make him the standout option for a fresh cycle ahead of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Whether the former France midfielder accepts the challenge remains the next question for the Lions of Teranga.
