The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a Sport Infrastructure Development Law aimed at creating a sustainable framework for the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of sporting facilities across Nigeria.
The new law is designed to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on annual budgetary allocations by attracting long-term investments and increasing private sector participation in sports development.
President Bola Tinubu announced the approval during the grand finale of the second Renewed Hope West African Horse Racing Derby in Kaduna. The President’s speech was delivered on his behalf by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.
The law seeks to establish a more predictable and sustainable funding mechanism for sports infrastructure. It also authorises the National Sports Commission (NSC) to operate commercial accounts and explore various funding options, including partnerships, sponsorships, and concessions with the private sector.
According to the government, the initiative is part of efforts to reposition sports as a viable economic sector capable of attracting investments, creating jobs, and promoting youth development.
In addition to the new law, the Federal Government approved other reforms to strengthen sports administration. These include expanded opportunities for the National Sports Commission to partner with private investors in the delivery, management, and maintenance of modern sporting facilities.
The NSC is currently overseeing several infrastructure projects nationwide, including the reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna and the revamping of the Zaria Horse Racing and Polo Club.
The approval of the Sport Infrastructure Development Law reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transforming Nigerian sports into a sustainable industry. Officials believe the new framework will help address the long-standing challenge of inadequate and poorly maintained sporting facilities across the country.
The development has been welcomed by stakeholders in the sports sector, who have long advocated for better funding models beyond government budgets.
The National Sports Commission is expected to begin implementation of the new law in the coming months.
