Women Protest Against Sex Workers in Enugu Community

Women Protest Against Sex Workers in Enugu Community

Women in Elugwu Akwu community, Enugu State, have taken to the streets to protest against sex workers, whom they accused of collecting their husbands and sons.

The protest, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media on Wednesday, saw the women chanting slogans demanding an end to what they described as the negative influence of commercial sex workers in their area.

Protesters Blame Sex Workers for Family Breakdown

In the video, the women expressed frustration that sex workers in the community have taken over their husbands and are also luring their sons into immoral behaviour. They demanded that the sex workers leave the community immediately.

The protesters marched through the streets, voicing their concerns about the impact of prostitution on family values and the moral upbringing of young men in the area.

Some of the women were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as “End Ashawo in Elugwu Akwu,” highlighting their demand for the removal of commercial sex workers from their community.

    Community Reaction

The protest has generated mixed reactions on social media. While some people supported the women for standing up for family values, others questioned the approach, arguing that the problem goes beyond sex workers and includes the men who patronise them.

Some commenters noted that the protest reflects deeper issues of moral decay and lack of economic opportunities, which push both young women into sex work and men into seeking their services.

Others pointed out that the women should also address the conduct of their husbands and sons, rather than placing the entire blame on sex workers.

    Calls for Government Intervention

The development has once again brought to the fore the growing concerns about the spread of prostitution in some communities and its effects on family structures.

Some residents have called on the Enugu State Government and local authorities to intervene by providing alternative means of livelihood for young people and enforcing laws against open prostitution in residential areas.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Enugu State Government or security agencies regarding the protest.

The video of the protest continues to generate discussions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the declining moral values in some communities.
