The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Badagry Area Command, has uncovered an alleged fake university operating from a three-bedroom apartment in Ilado, Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, and rescued 106 youths allegedly lured into the fraudulent scheme.
The operation, which was carried out on Monday, July 20, 2026, revealed that what was being presented online as a distance learning centre affiliated with a foreign university was, in reality, a fraudulent setup run from a residential apartment.
According to the NSCDC, the suspected fake institution had lured young people from different parts of Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries with promises of admission into foreign universities through a distance learning programme.
Preliminary investigations showed that victims were made to pay admission and processing fees ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦1.5 million.
The NSCDC said the 106 rescued youths have been taken into protective custody, while the alleged proprietor of the illegal “university” has been arrested.
The NSCDC, in a statement, confirmed that the matter has been referred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation, as the operation bears the hallmarks of human trafficking and organised fraud.
The Corps commended members of the public who provided useful information that led to the successful raid and urged Nigerians to be wary of institutions offering unrealistic foreign admission opportunities without proper verification.
Many of the rescued youths reportedly believed they were enrolling in a legitimate academic programme that would lead to foreign certification. Instead, they were allegedly defrauded of large sums of money under false pretences.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the scam and identify other individuals who may be involved in the operation.
The NSCDC has warned members of the public, especially young people and parents, to always verify the authenticity of any educational institution before making payments or committing to any programme.
The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians from all forms of fraud, exploitation, and illegal activities.
