The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has confirmed that the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of the ongoing reforms to the scheme.
The development is seen as a move to promote Nigerian cultural heritage and boost the local textile industry.
Minister Confirms Shift to Adire and Ankara Fabrics
Speaking on the reforms, the Minister stated that the new uniforms would feature Adire and Ankara fabrics, which are produced locally in states such as Ogun and Kwara. He emphasised the importance of supporting domestic production and keeping resources within the country.
“It’s Adire… Let’s put our money back into the country,” the Minister said, highlighting the availability of textile industries capable of meeting the demand.
The change aligns with the broader NYSC reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council, which include a redesigned orientation programme and a shift towards skills development.
Cultural and Economic Significance of Adire
Adire is a traditional Yoruba tie-and-dye fabric known for its intricate patterns and deep cultural roots, particularly in southwestern Nigeria. It is handmade using resist-dyeing techniques and has long been a symbol of identity and craftsmanship.
The decision to adopt Adire for the NYSC uniform is being viewed by many as a positive step towards cultural preservation and economic empowerment for local artisans and textile producers. Supporters argue that it will create jobs and strengthen Nigeria’s creative industry.
Mixed Public Reactions
The announcement has generated significant discussion online. While many Nigerians welcomed the move as a celebration of indigenous culture and a boost for local manufacturing, others raised concerns about practicality, uniformity across different regions, and the need to accommodate Nigeria’s diverse cultural identities.
Some have called for the uniforms to reflect a broader representation of Nigerian fabrics beyond Adire and Ankara.
The Ministry is expected to provide further details on the design, production timeline, and rollout of the new uniforms in the coming weeks.
