ABUJA — The political landscape in Nigeria is heating up as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) officially released its comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

In a press release issued today, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and signed by the National Chairman, Sen. Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, and Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu Esq., the party outlined a rapid-fire schedule for aspirants seeking elective positions.

    Key Dates to Watch

According to the document labeled image.png, the race begins almost immediately:

    • Sale of Expression of Interest Forms: Wednesday, May 13 – Monday, May 18, 2026.
    • Screening and Interview of Aspirants: Tuesday, May 19 – Thursday, May 21, 2026.
    • Primary Elections (Various Offices): Wednesday, May 27 – Thursday, May 28, 2026.
    • Presidential Primary Election: Friday, May 29, 2026, in Abuja.

The party noted that while screening for State House of Assembly aspirants will take place in their respective states, National Assembly and Presidential aspirants must appear at the National Headquarters in Abuja.

    The High Cost of Ambition

The NDC also made public the approved nomination fees, which it describes as “among the lowest compared to those of other major political parties”. However, the figures still represent a significant investment for hopefuls:

    PositionExpression of InterestNomination FormTotal
    Presidency₦20 Million₦40 Million₦60 Million
    Governorship₦10 Million₦20 Million₦30 Million
    Senate₦3 Million₦5 Million₦8 Million
    House of Reps₦2 Million₦4 Million₦6 Million
    State House of Assembly₦1 Million₦1.5 Million₦2.5 Million

In a move toward inclusivity, the party announced a significant discount for specific demographics: female aspirants will pay 50%, and persons living with disability (PWDs) will pay 25% of the fees across all categories.

    Commitment to “Open Secret Ballot”

To ensure internal democracy and fairness, the NDC has opted for the “open secret ballot” system for its primaries. The party leadership emphasized that all aspirants would be required to sign an undertaking to adhere to the party’s guidelines and code of conduct.

“The party reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and credible primary election process capable of producing competent candidates for the 2027 general elections,” the statement concluded.
