Security operatives in Edo State have dismantled a major kidnap network in the central senatorial district after an arrested suspect, who was shot by his own gang members during an argument over ransom money, began cooperating with authorities.
The breakthrough operation, carried out by the Edo Security Corps, has led to the discovery of several hideouts used by the criminals. The suspect, now in custody, is said to have guided the team through bush paths and forested areas in Edo Central, helping them uncover key locations linked to the gang’s activities.
How the Suspect Was Shot by His Own Gang
According to reports making the rounds on social media, the arrested suspect had a disagreement with other members of the gang while sharing ransom money collected from a recent kidnapping. In the heat of the argument, his colleagues allegedly opened fire on him, leaving him injured.
Rather than protecting their hideouts, the wounded suspect chose to cooperate with security forces. He reportedly led operatives on a raid that exposed multiple camps used by the kidnappers operating in the area.
Video footage from the operation, shared by The Benin Blogger and originally aired by EBS Benin, shows armed security personnel moving through thick vegetation and scenes of suspects on the ground. The clips, credited to reporter Friday Ehimotor, captured the moment the arrested suspect assisted the team in locating the hideouts.
Edo Security Corps Intensifies Crackdown
The Edo State government has been ramping up efforts to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes, especially in the central and northern parts of the state, which have recorded several high-profile abductions in recent months. This latest success is being celebrated as a significant win for the security agencies.
Residents of Edo Central have expressed relief over the development, with many calling on the government to sustain the pressure on criminal elements. Some have also urged security operatives to extend similar operations to other troubled areas in the state.
The arrested suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. It is not yet clear how many members of the gang have been apprehended or if more arrests are expected in the coming days.
This operation comes at a time when Edo State has continued to record gains in the fight against insecurity, with the current administration investing heavily in the Edo Security Corps and intelligence-driven operations.
