ABUJA — Nigeria’s political class is in mourning following the confirmed kidnapping and brutal murder of Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, a former member of the House of Representatives from Jigawa State, in what relatives and associates describe as a “senseless act of barbarism” amid the country’s worsening security crisis.
The tragic development was announced Tuesday by former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator Henry Seriake Dickson in an emotional post on social media platform X, where he described Abba Anas as a “dear friend, ally, and brother” whose death has left him “devastated and heartbroken.”
The Incident: Kidnapping, Ransom, and Murder
According to Senator Dickson’s account, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu was abducted alongside colleagues while travelling in Northern Nigeria—a region that has witnessed a sharp escalation in kidnappings, banditry, and targeted violence against public figures in recent months.
Disturbingly, Dickson revealed that even after a ransom demand was reportedly met, Abba Anas was still “brutally killed.” The circumstances surrounding the murder remain under investigation, though security sources indicate that the incident is being treated as part of the broader pattern of criminal kidnappings for ransom that have plagued Nigeria’s northern corridors.
“The news left me devastated and heartbroken at the tragic and painful manner in which such a good man lost his life,” Dickson wrote.
A Life of Service: From the House to the Doctrine of Necessity
Hon. Abba Anas Adamu was no ordinary politician. His legacy is intertwined with one of Nigeria’s most critical constitutional moments: the 2010 “Doctrine of Necessity” resolution that enabled then-Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to assume executive powers following the prolonged illness of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Senator Dickson recalled that during that turbulent period, he led a group of patriotic lawmakers under the Nigeria First Forum and appointed Abba Anas to chair the strategic team. “Patriots like Hon. Abba Anas defied all odds, inducement, intimidation and blackmail,” Dickson noted.
It was Abba Anas who seconded the historic motion—moved by Hon. Dr. Sani Abdu of Bauchi State—that paved the way for constitutional continuity. “Some others involved in that patriotic effort have since gone to be with their Maker, like Hon. Bethel Amadi and Hon. Independence Ogunewe, while others are still alive. Now, Abba Anas has joined them,” Dickson added.
Beyond that defining moment, Abba Anas remained active in national politics. He was among the founding members of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) and later affiliated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), continuing to contribute to political discourse until his death.
A Pattern of Targeted Violence
The murder of Hon. Abba Anas Adamu underscores a troubling trend: the increasing vulnerability of political figures, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to violent crime across Nigeria.
Security analysts note that kidnappers have grown bolder, often targeting individuals perceived to have access to resources or influence. The fact that a ransom was paid yet the victim was still killed raises urgent questions about the motives of the perpetrators and the effectiveness of current security responses.
“This is so sad! We need to fix the insecurity of this country. It is worrisome,” commented one social media user in reaction to Dickson’s post.
Political Reactions and Calls for Action
Senator Dickson’s tribute has sparked widespread condolences across political and social media platforms. Colleagues, constituents, and civil society groups have expressed shock and grief, while also demanding concrete action from the Federal Government to address the security vacuum.
“In the passing of Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, Nigeria has lost a patriot. We have lost a friend, a brother, and a committed nationalist,” Dickson stated. “Personally, I have lost a loyal ally, confidant, and brother.”
He announced plans to join friends and associates in paying a formal condolence visit to the family in Jigawa State in the coming days.
