Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has celebrated the historic achievement of Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, whose painting of former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama was unveiled recently.
Obi described the moment as a proud one for Nigeria and a powerful inspiration for the country’s youth.
Njideka’s Global Achievement
In a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, Obi expressed pride that former President Obama publicly celebrated the brilliance of Njideka Akunyili Crosby. He noted that her work has brought Nigeria’s shared history to the global stage through the first joint official portrait of the Obamas.
Njideka, the daughter of the late Dr. Chike Akunyili and Prof. Dora Akunyili, is a Los Angeles-based visual artist whose work often explores themes of identity, culture, and personal history.
Obi said her achievement is a reminder to Nigerian youths that talent combined with hard work and discipline can lead to global recognition.
Call for Hard Work and Excellence
Quoting the Greek philosopher Aristotle, Obi emphasised that excellence is not an accident but a habit formed through high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution.
He urged young Nigerians to look up to individuals like Njideka as true role models. According to him, success is not found in shortcuts but in the relentless pursuit of excellence, while honouring one’s roots and using one’s gifts to make a global impact.
Obi added that if Nigerians remain committed to merit and hard work, the new Nigeria they desire will be built by such exemplary minds.
A New Nigeria is POssible
The former governor concluded his message by stating that with focused and hard-working youths, a new Nigeria is possible.
Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s recognition by the Obamas has been widely celebrated by Nigerians at home and in the diaspora as another example of Nigerian excellence on the world stage.
Peter Obi’s post has also generated positive reactions from many of his followers, who see it as a continued effort to inspire hope and focus on merit, discipline, and national pride.
