ABUJA, April 30, 2026 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The nomination, announced by the State House on Thursday, was transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional requirements. It follows the resignation of former Minister Adebayo Adelabu, whose exit took effect today after he submitted his letter on April 22 to pursue the 2027 Oyo State governorship race under the All Progressives Congress.

Adelabu, who had served since the early days of the Tinubu administration, cited the need to focus fully on his electoral ambitions. In his resignation letter, he also recommended the creation of a Coordinating Minister for Energy to strengthen integration across power, gas, and related sectors.
Mr Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, brings over 35 years of experience as a fiscal and economic reform expert spanning public and private sectors. A first-class Civil Engineering graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University (1988), he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
He rose to Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led major initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, governance, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring. He has advised the Presidency, several state governments, and international bodies on strategic reforms, including revenue optimisation and infrastructure development.
The power sector remains a priority for the Tinubu administration amid ongoing challenges of grid stability, generation capacity, and private-sector investment. Tegbe’s appointment, if confirmed, is expected to inject fresh technocratic expertise into efforts to deliver reliable electricity as part of the “Renewed Hope” agenda. The Senate is expected to commence screening of the nominee in the coming days.
